A large early 19th century mahogany wine coaster with brass casters with laminated leather rollers, probably made by James Mein of Kelso (in southern Scotland). It measures 9.5 inches in diameter. Typicak features of James Mein coasters, they are between 9 & 10 inches diameter. The coasters have three brass casters set into the underside, and have laminated leather rollers. A few of his coasters bear his trade label, or if not, the 'shadow' where it was once glued to the centre of the underside, can usually be seen. A shadow can be seen on the underneath of this coaster.Date: c.1825
