Rebuilt in the 1880's on the site of the former coaching inn, The Swan is a glorious example of Victorian architecture, with striking Tudor Revival half-timbered gables atop red-brick chequered walls. Standing opposite the 13th century Grade I listed St Oswald's Church, where Cromwell's troops rested after the bloody Battle of Winwick Pass, The Swan is at the heart of the historic village of Winwick. Winwick Parish is surrounded by the attractive countryside of Sankey Valley from its wooded hillsides and lowlands to the panoramic heights of purple moorland and wild hills. The coast-to-coast Trans-Pennine Trail passes close by at Sankey Valley Country Park. The historic Swan Inn is a perfect point from which to explore the Cheshire countryside, with a lovely beer garden for al fresco dining in summer, and a delicious seasonal pub menu and Sunday roasts served all-year-round.historic pub page. The Swan is a splendid 19th century Victorian tavern on the site of the former coaching inn of the same name, located in the picturesque Cheshire village of Winwick on the old turnpike road from Warrington to Wigan, now the A49. Rebuilt in the 1880's at the height of Victorian enthusiasm for Tudor Revival architecture, this attractive inn with half-timbered gables on brick walls of chequered red and grey dominates the crossroads that formed the ancient centre of Winwick village. Opposite the historic 13th century church, itself built on the site of an earlier place of worship recorded in the Domesday Book, The Swan hosted travellers on the turnpike road and pilgrims journeying to St Oswald's Well. The well water is believed to have special healing powers.
