Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel 'beautiful', meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time. Fine antique r oyal fruit wood fan with fruit wood shafts, brass fittings with mother-of-pearl buttons, decorated with signatures on each leaf dated 1903 with different dates - there are a total of twenty-five signatures. This royal fan comes from the descendants of Duchess Thyra Crown Princess of Hanover, Duchess of Cumberland (1853-1933), She was the youngest daughter and fifth child of King Christian IX of Denmark and in 1878, she married Ernest Augustus, the exiled heir to the Kingdom of Hanover as it had been annexed by Prussia in 1866, she spent most of her life in exile with her husband in Austria. Thyra was the sister of King Frederick VIII of Denmark, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, King George I of Greece, Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia and Prince Valdemar of Denmark. Her husband died on 14 November 1923 and she survived him by ten years and died in Gmunden, Upper Austria on 26 February 1933 Signatures included are: Marie [of Hannover, Duchess Thyra's mother-in-law], Mary von Hannover [Marie of Hannover, Duchess Thyra's sister-in-law], Ernst August [of Cumberland, the elder, Duchess Thyra's husband], in Danish Gmunden 1903, 23 years later, Thyra [of Cumberland], Georg Wilhelm [of Cumberland, Duchess Thyra's son], Alix, Olga [Alexandrovna of Russia, Duchess Thyra's niece], Ernst August [of Cumberland, Duchess Thyra's son], and others of noble and bourgeois families.
