Restaurant Branding & LogoClient: Goorsha Ethiopian Restaurant
Work Completed: Website copywriting, brand story; logo and collateral design in collaboration with Works-Progress Design

What’s a goorsha? Durham’s #1 Ethiopian restaurant engaged Wonsupona to answer that exact question.

In Ethiopian culture, friendship, honor and love are expressed by feeding each other – an act known as a goorsha. It was only fitting that Ethiopian native Fasil Tesfaye name his new Durham restaurant after this important social grace. The challenge was in telling the verbal and visual story behind this new eating experience using beautiful language and design.

We began with the story, which aimed to articulate the sacredness of the vision behind the restaurant.

The incredibly talented folks at Works-Progress Design created the logo and design system. Inspired by the brand story, the logo is of two birds feeding each other (demonstrating a goorsha) with a heart in the white space to symbolize the love shared. The birds feature traditional Ethiopian patterns, as does the collateral system. The bright colors were selected to represent the vivid nature of Ethiopian cuisine.
